Top 20 of 2009In no particular order:jj– n° 2. Swedish pop music has grown very close to my heart and this album is right in track with balearics sea Ibiza/Caribbean/Spanish sailing smooth escapism with dub and ocean on the back my mind. Coming from the label run by The Tough Alliance it’s not surprising it’s had to find and even harder on the soul. I don’t want forget to mention that this album has the strangest track that’s a 50 cent cover with snippets of Lil’ Wayne, whale noises, dub, hard drug references and Oasis, it’s kind of amazing.
I am alway going to be watching the label Sincerely Yours for albums like these.Animal Collective- Merriweather Post Pavilion Live. They play a much different show live, almost like a rave/60’s psychedelic rock show it’s a must hear if and see you like the studio album. Merriweather Post Pavilion is on a lot of people top of the year lists and for good reasons. I won’t be surprised if 10 years from now Animal Collective becomes a band of a generation.John Vanderslice & Mountain Goats W/Chris Stamey- Moon Colony Bloodbath. This EP blew me away early in the year and the explosion resonated through out the year. It’s a concept album about a space colony that harvests organs. Darnielle and Vanderslice take turns telling the story of a man who steals organs to save himself from a less then wonderful death.
It’s a sad and powerful album with a great way of telling a story.Death Cab For Cutie- The Open Door. The group kind of went back to it’s more simple roots and came heavy with the lyrics once again. I was hoping the LP would have come out in 09′ but no luck. I hope the LP is on the same lines as this most relistenable record.Candy Claws- In Dreams of Sea Life. It is kind of an animal collective rip off but it’s way smooth and laid back with layered vocals, guitars and soft sounds of a calm sea on a warm Saturday. I’m not amazed in its melodies but the friendliness makes up for that.
A lot of beach love went into this album even though it’s a duo from Colorado and was made in a bedroom or that’s what it sounds like.Emeralds- s/t. Steve Hauschildt and Mark McGuire from Cleveland, Ohio bring theory to their music with non-beat based flowing improvisational noise. Layers of noise that are fun for the ears, it’s really something new and exciting. Lots of noise is harsh and abrasive but this band is the exact opposite of that and the term “noise” does not quite fit, but I don’t know if I would call it electronic, rock and it’s too cool to be called new age. The other three or four other albums they put out this year as well as their solo work is just as good.Sleigh Bells- s/t. This stuff rocks, the pop, hip-hop, punk, oldies for the kids with hand claps, simple cords and distortion especially in the recording. But really Sleigh Bells is for anyone who has heard of Bikini kill or The Go Team.
From the first song till the seventh it’s not to stop, and your dance/rock party will thank me. You can hear the Brooklyn and taste the grime.Drake- So Far Gone. Mixtape for the hip-hop softies with indie rock and old school jams. Lil’ Wayne, the man who has not been quite or lazy in the last two years is a reoccurring guest as well as Lloyd, Trey Songz, Kanye West, Peter Bjorn & John, Lykke Li and Santogold. If all goes as planned this guy will be seen a lot in 2010 and the ladies will be on his jock like me all over the thanksgiving turkey with rye beard stuffing, yeah it was good. Lets just hope this Canadian boy wonder is all the hype and mixtape says. The XX- XX.
Minimal rock and roll from the U.K. It’s kind of like a breathy Kim Deal got together with one of her emo kid boyfriend and wrote about much they disliked their relationship and how even though the sex is great it would never work and a friendship, also is a mistake. But every once in a while they see each other in town and do it in an alley way somewhere. Much like most of the young relationships that happen between the 20’s and 30’s unless she gets pregnant. But really it’s about love.
He want her, she plays hard to get, she does not know what she wants, he’s confused and they both feel alone. Young love and its silent monster.
It’s an album and a feeling.Propagandhi- Supporting Caste. Canadian punk that needs respect. Pro-gay (a term they coined themselves), Pro-vegetarian, Anti-Bush, Anti-war Punk Rock!A Sunny Day In Glasgow- Ashes Grammar. I was waiting for an album like this to come out and here it is. Shoegaze with hypnotic waves of confusion after a nice ride of pop and choral layered vocals on the first couple of track with a My Bloody Valentine influence permeating lots of background.Jack Rose (R.I.P.) I have listened to him before and after his passing. Wolfenstein the new order pc game download full. Great American music.Graham Lambkin- Softly Softly Copy Copy. It’s a bunch of sound clips clipped together with classical instruments to make something wonderful and fresh.
It was on someone else’s list of the year and when I heard it for the first time I stopped and just sat. It’s a sound journey diving under the sea, exploring the jungle and ending up at home (I’m guessing). Graham Lambkin of Kent, England previously in The Shadow Ring, changes for the better with every album. Hear it.Moofish Catfish- Yours To Share. Fun and fun Swedish pop twee (can you say “twee”) rock music.

Sounds like they are 12 or 13 years old and learned English only for the record to make it here to the states. Don’t forget to listen to this album to make rock music fun again. Simplicity and format is a beautiful thing. Metal artists take note, these chick can rip without the distortion.John Zorn- Femina and O’o. John Zorn is crafting much more mainstream and easier to handle records. I did like Zorns’ early work of long drawn out squealing horns but these albums go down easier and leave no bad after taste. John Zorn must have settled somewhat and made peace with that inner demon or he’s just saving energy for another new type of jazz chaos.Cave- Psychic Psummers.
It’s a jam not a jelly.Atlas Sound- Logos. It rocks in an ambient way and lives up to the hype put out by Pitchfork Media and all the hip hipsters.Zu- Carboniferous. It’s hard and even harder to pin down in a genre but I think that’s a good thing.Alva Noto- Xerrox Vol. Transport yourself to inner space where long tones and static become part of your brainwaves forcing you pay attention and feel a little uneasy.
Very cool, and I mean it will make your house feel 10 to 20 degrees colder. Not recommended when your trying to set the mood for a romantic night in with your special lady friend.Memory Tapes/cassette/Weird Tapes- Everything Dayve Hawk has put out. Memory Tapes is a hit, and rightfully so with its beats and groove superb and it’s mood just on the level of relaxing and chillin’ wit da homies. While Memory Cassette- Call and Response EP is like the soft part of the smashing pumpkins and chillwaveish music had a baby that was forced to suck down helium and make a record. Weird Tapes is more on the disco/electro/sample side and is also a must hear for anyone who like the other two. I would start with Memory Tapes- Seeing Magic, it’s the most mainstream and should be available at your local independent record store. Dayve don’t get lost in the shuffle. One of my new years resolutions is to hear more local music.
It’s Twenty Ten!
